Count Wilhelm Ludwig August von Hochberg, Prince of Baden
Count Wilhelm Ludwig August von Hochberg, Prince of Baden
Baden as part of the Rhine Confederation to provided troops for the campaign against Russia in 1812, the 20 year-old Count Wilhelm von Hochberg to command the approx. 8,000-strong Baden infantry brigade. The troop formation became part of the army corps of Marshal Claude-Victor Perrin gen. Victor and the division of General Herman Willem Daendels .
When the Grande Armée retreated , the Baden troops covered the crossing over the Beresina and distinguished themselves in the Battle of the Beresina on November 28, 1812 . However, on December 7, 1812, the Baden Brigade disbanded near Wilna . Wilhelm was able to withdraw to Marienwerder , where only 145 men from the original formation arrived.
On November 20, 1813 the Grand Duchy of Baden left the confederation and joined Prussia, Austria and Russia in the wars of liberation. The Baden Landwehr and Landsturm were organised on the Prussian structure, and the introduction of general conscription in December 1813 enabled a total of 16,000 men to enlist be summoned. Reinforced by troops from the principalities of Liechtenstein and Hohenzollern, they formed the VIII Army Corps under the command of Wilhelm Graf von Hochberg. The corps besieged the French fortresses of Kehl , Strasbourg, Landau in der Pfalz and Pfalzburg and returned to Baden in June 1814. During the summer campaign of 1815, another field division had to be raised, but it did not take part in any combat operations.

Brandenburg Dragoons 2nd Squadron
Brandenburg Dragoons 2nd Squadron
General Major Graf von Wylich 5th Brandenburg Dragoons
General Major Carl Heinrich Graf von Wylich und Luttum

On 9 April 1784 he became ensign of the Infantry Regiment of Anhalt-Bernburg, and on 26 October 1786 lieutenant. One year later, he was transferred to the newly formed fusilier battalion von Schenck. His battalion participated in the Dutch campaign of 1787. Shortly thereafter, as an ordonnance officer, he accompanied general Graf Schulenburg-Renert in the war against France. A fall from his horse in 1793 led to a fracture of his foot and rendered him unsuitable for field duties.
He was assigned as an assistant to the Upper War Collegium, where he remained, raising in rank, until the treaty of Tilsit in 1807. In the same year he was assigned to hold the Report of Military Affairs. On 16 December 1808 was reassigned as the head of the Military Economy Department.
He became general major on 3 February 1810. In 1811 General Major Graf von Wylich was the commander of the 5th Brandenburg regiment from until 1814.The regiment fought at Lützen (2 May 1813), Bautzen (20-21 May 1813), Dennewitz (6 September 1813), and Leipzig (16-19 October 1813). In the war of 1812 against Russia, he was sent by the king to Warsaw, to negotiate with Emperor Napoleon the right of passage through Prussian territories. In 1814 and 1815, Graf Lottum remained mostly in Paris, to manage outstanding payments owed by France. On 3 August 1828, he was appointed General of the Infantry by the king. Graf Lottum died in Berlin on 14 February 1841.

Sassanid Prince Ardeshir II
Prince Ardeshir II
Prince Ardeshir, brother of Shapur II and leader of the Pushtigbhan of the royal hosehold. Along with his brother they successfully conquered Armenia and expanded the borders of the empire against Rome and in the east. He predominantly lead the defence in the north against the nomadic tribal invasions and squashed the nobles rebellion until his nephew was made King Shapur III. Another sub general for my Sassanid army, again an A&A miniature which make up the majority of my sassans.

Sassanid Pushtigbhan, Princes guard
Sassanid Pushtigbhan
My second unit of Sassanid Royal guard, this unit is also from A & A miniatures range. These chaps have been in my project drawers for around ten years. I ground off the raised decor with the dremel than sanded the horses smooth with wet and dry sandpaper, so a time consuming job to say the least. Quite happy with them could of spent more time on them but elected to get them table ready. They are the last cavalry unit I have for the army.

Finally had some time to sit down and complete some projects this week. I started these chaps while I was in Australia, wrapped them carefully and shipped them with me in my suitcase. A few dings but nothing major, so based the horses and touched up the troopers and matt varnished and based today. Flags on order.

History
The Brandenburgisches Dragoner-Regiment Number 5 (Prinz Wilhelm) was formed on the 16 October, 1807, from the 1st and 2nd squadrons of the old 5th von Balliodz Kürassiere Regiment and the depot, 2nd, 3rd and 4th squadrons of the old 1st Prince William Dragoon Regiment. It was thus regarded as a "new" regiment rather than one of the surviving "old" regiments. In 1812 the 1st and 3rd squadrons were merged with squadrons from the 2nd (1st West Prussian) Dragoons and sent to Russia, as part of the Prussian force accompanying Napoleon on his invasion of Russia. The regiment saw minor action in the campaign and lost 1 officer, 34 men and 86 horses. Eckau, Tomaszna, Dahlankirchen, Garrosenkrug.
In 1813, with the declaration of war on Napoleon, the regiment saw far heavier fighting. Part of 1. Brigade, III Corps Reserve Cavalry, it was part of Bernadotte's Army of the North and saw action at Stettin, Dannicow, Merseburg, Gröss Gorschen, Borna, Bautzen and Hanau. The regiment was heavily engaged in the defeat of the French at Dennewitz. It is credited with riding over three French squares and a Württemberg square, a French battery (capturing four guns), routing a Polish uhlan regiment and sharing the capture of 412 wagons and 4 (some sources say 7) flags with the 2nd Dragoons and 1st Pommerania Landwehr Cavalry. But the unit paid a price, losing 7 officers, 88 men and 156 horses.
In 1814 the regiment was present at Gorkum, Oudenarde, Antwerp, Lille, Deventer, Soisson and Laon.
1815 saw the regiment as part of the cavalry reserve of I Korps, fighting in Belgium and France. At Lambusart, ligny, La Belle Alliance (Waterloo), Villiers-Cotterets (the regiment caught the fleeing French and captured 3 guns, a howitzer and 22 ammunition wagons), Issay and La Fere.
Brandenburgisches Dragoner-Regiment Nr 5 fahne.

Information on the standard carried by the regiment, from an Article by Dallas Gavin
Alt, Redlin, Riehn, RWM, Wise: Carried a Regiments-Fahne of the Königin Dragoner-Regiment. Swallow-tailed, black field, white center and gold embroidery. Staff black (Redlin- natural wood) with gold trim, bandolier cornflower blue (Alt) or black (RWM) with gold trim
Nash, Over, Rawkins: As above but of FR pattern.
Conclusion: I believe this standard to be a dragoon pattern of the FWR type. The field was black with a silver center and gold embroidery.

Book review -Tilly-sur-Seulles 1944
Tilly-sur-Seulles
Finally back from our holidays in the lower Loire and some packages were awaiting me when I returned home. First up was a bunch of books from the Heimdal book sale.
A book I have been meaning to pick up was Stéphane Jacquet’s, Tilly-sur-Seulles 1944, as it relates to my 50th infantry division project. Lots of Fabulous then and now photos and lots of personal accounts and maps. I will be plowing through this to make up some scenarios for my Tyne Tees and using what I can for building references and perhaps a tour.
I rate all of Heimdals ww2 books and Stéphane as a author does a great job with his series. The text is in English and French and is worth the €59 price tag (on sale €50) and is a big tome with lots of great information. Rate 10 out of 10!

Polish Army 1939 Project part 1
Polish Army project part 1

For the AA, artillery and AT guns I will add a mix of pieces. First to Fight plastic gun crews mostly to crew some plastic, resin and metal gun pieces and Early War Models metal crews for the specialists. Lots of horse drawn equipment is required so more HAT and EWM horse drawn wagons. For trucks FTF Fiat and Praga trucks and IBG kits for fiat staff and radio cars.
For the next article I will cover my organisation of my cavalry. I need to purchase FTF mounted Uhlan cavalry for command figs and horseholder. I already have the HAT plastic French for the mounted component. I would also like to add First to Fight dismounted cavalry portion and some SHQ also. I need to purchase the specific FAA miniatures for the 10th Motorised Cavalry Brigade motorcyclists. Finally scratch build and purchase some more vehicles mostly soft skins mostly motorcycles but I may print some also. I have set a target of completion for next year for the cavalry.
My fighter and fighter bomber air component is complete except for a bomber, which I will wait for one to come up on ebay or such.
Rapid Fire does not have a official list for Poles yet, but there are some unofficial lists around on which I have loosely based mine on. Rapid Fire does have the charts for guns, vehicles and aircraft though which is helpful when playing.
The first task is to build a Infantry division of a single regiment, than add the support elements for extra goodies for game play, as I like to see supply and medical especially on the tabletop. The Polish Infantry Regiments were very large and basically followed the same structure, 3 battalions plus support elements. I am not planning on painting any reserve regiments or the static units, although I am tempted in the future to build Polish field defence bunkers.

The 10 Belgian ACG1 (AMC 35, 9 with the altered belgian turret) were formed into two platoons for the invasion and was attached to the Corps de Cavalerie T13 2nd Division. The unit initially were based in Brussels but in the first week were moved to defend the bridges between Willebroek and Vilvoorde. The Squadron was commanded by Kapitein R.Hullebroeck , and divided into two platoons of 4 tanks with two in reserve.

The Belgian Air Component
The Belgian Air Component was small but had a good training system so a number of pilots were well qualified but most the the air component was mostly destroyed on the ground in the opening day of the war.
On the early morning of May 10, the alarm was sounded, and the pilots at Schaffen Air Base went to their planes, thinking it was an exercise. A few minutes later, 50 unidentified aircraft flew over the airfield. Despite his orders, Captaine Max Guisgand, the commander of 1/1/2 Gladiators flew his planes into the air at 0420 hrs while the Hurricanes started their engines. 12 minutes later, three Heinkel 111s were spotted, not troubled by AA fire. The planes in the air were not there when the 111s came, and the 111s strafed the airfield several times. The planes tried to take off through the explosions and fires. A bullet punctured the main wheel of Lt. Wilmonts Gladiator and he rammed a Hurricane. Minutes later 110s and Dornier Do 17 strafed and bombed the airfield. Four Hurricanes were set on fire, and 6 others were damaged. The roof of the hangar fell in and the planes in it were destroyed. Sgt. Libert was burned badly when the fuel tank of his Hurricane exploded. Captaine Van den Hove d'Ertsenrijick and Caparol Jacobs managed to escape from Schaffen. They encountered some bombers but didn't manage to shoot down any, even though helped by Gladiator pilot Sgt. Van den Broecke. The third section of Gladiators from 1/1/2 almost collided with the three 111s and had to break away.
The second section (Cpt. Gerard (G-27), Sgt. Henri Winand (G-32) and Sgt. Henri Clinquart (G-34) spotted a formation of enemy bombers and broke it up. During the bombing, other gladiators left Schaffen for Beauvechain. Hurricane pilots Siroux, Lelarge and a lt.) flew three of them. Other reported engagements were when at 0900 10 109s ran in to two Gladiators over Tirlemont. Both were shot down and one pilot bailed out. At 1000 hrs, three Gladiators were shot down by 1/JG27 while trying to intercept escorted Ju87s.
A few missions were completed by the Belgians bombing three bridges on the Albert Canal on the of 11th May. The bombing was done by Fairey Battles of the 5/III/3Aé, the fighter escort was provided by 1/I/2Aé Gloster Gladiators. On the 11th May out of fifteen Battles that attacked pontoons bridge across the Maastricht, Veldwezelt, Vroenhoven and Briegden, only five aircraft survived.
The 9th and 11th squadron flying R31s still had aircraft in the sky when the surrender was announced on the 28th.

Renard R-31 21 in service reconnaissance (purchased)
Fiat CR.42 Falco 23 in service 3éme (destroyed on the ground) and 4th éme squadrons (completed)

Hawker Hurricane mk1 11 in service (only two survived the bombing of the airfield on the 10th of May, they were lost on the 11th) (completed)

30 day Kit build challenge -2022
April 30 day Kit challenge!
So what is the 30 day kit challenge? Well, something I shamelessly copied from Gunbird and his blog "20mm and then some" back in 2017 when we chatted about doing something about our piles of shame.
When I moved to France I found I had a lot of unbuilt kits, particularly modern and ww2, plus some ww1 aircraft make up the majority. I also suffer from half built kit syndrome, as I like to paint the interiors, the pilots or drivers then assemble the kit. So with that in mind I'm starting the 30 day kit build, if you like join me and blog about it, steal the picture below if you like
Join me if you wish on Facebook, Blog and Instagram using the tag
#30daykitchallenge
Or join the fun on the
RULES
Goals are simple, you will build your part built and new kits during the 30 day challenge:- Any material (plastic, resin, metal, wood).
- New in the box or partially built, it matters not.
- Gun, tank, truck, aircraft, ship, figure animal? Your call.
- Kit must be basically finished, based if you prefer that, to qualify as a build.
- The completed kit must be ready for primer.
- Resin and metal upgradesets can be applied after the build.....the goal is to get kits built and ready for primer, not to finish them with paint and varnish etc.
- You decide how many kits/models you want to build in the 30 day period.
- You set the penalty for not meeting your goal (and after that it is the honor system)
My goal is the period from 1/4/2022 up to 30/4/22, each day I plan to work on a kit until I have completed my goal. My goal is grand total of 30 kits, If I can build more kits in the month, then bonus.
My penalty is that if I don't make my target, is not to buy another kit for the rest of the year :(.
So, starting with Day #1 (1st April 2022), I'm starting with some Allied /72 PST kits first then onto some more tanks and aircraft.
Cheers

Grand Duchy of Baden Army 1809 Part 1
The Grand Duchy of Baden
As I have decided to add more Napoleonics to my collection this year, one of the armies you may of noticed last year was my Grand Duchy of Baden. The miniatures I will be using for the army are from the Murawski miniatures range.
A ideal army for wargaming at 1/20, as it is a nice small Division sized army with supporting cavalry, artillery and light infantry. As with most of my armies I like to research and pick a year or battle to focus on. As 1809 is a great campaign period for Baden I will build the army for this period so they can fight against my Austrians.
I will also plan to add a train, Gendarmes and possibly some militia types too which will require some green stuff to complete!
My plan is to build this year
- General staff (mostly completed in 2021)
- Baden garde du corps 4 figs
- Guard Infantry
- 3 Line Infantry regiments
- 1 Jager battalion
- Garde du Corps
- Dragoon Regiment (completed 2021)
- Hussar Regiment (using plastic Perry hussars)
- 1 foot Artillery battery (completed 2021)
- 1 horse artillery battery
- Train
- Gendarmes (completed in 2021)
- Militia Infantry and artillery. (possible Jager company, artillery company and veteran battalion inclusion)
Historical Organisation 1809-10
Baden elevated to an electorate in 1803, then a Grand Duchy in 1806, with the population with the additional lands acquired reaching one million people by 1810. The extra territory allowed the state to raise 10,000 men for the army of Baden. It served in the Grande Armee in the 1805, 1806, 1807 1809, 1812 and 1813 campaigns.
Ministers of War
7 March 1808 to 17 September 1808 Karl von Geusau
1808–1814 Karl Friedrich von Fischer
16 August 1814 to 4 Dezember 1833 Konrad von Schäffer

13th century Mangonel
Manganeau-Mangonel
Thought to be designed by the chinese and moved west by the 6th century the Mangonel was used widely as a siege engine across europe and asia. The engine was simple to build leverage system and used pulleys and ropes to launch the rocks or rock at the enemy walls, some drawings exist of a torsion type rope system with a pin which would create more energy to release stones further. The Mangonel was replaced by the trebuchet by the middle of the 13th century when stone tower and wall fortifications became the norm for fortifications in the middle east and europe.

Gallic Chieftain Virdovix,
Doomed Gallic Chieftain Virdovix
| Victrix chieftain Virdovix |
Three Roman legions lead by Quintus Titurius Sabinus campaigned in the peninsula in 56BC to put down the local uprisings by the Uenelli, Lexovii and Aulerci Federations after they had removed their tribal senators and rebelled against Caesars treaty. Sabinus then built a 3 legion encampment at Petit-Celland (close to modern Avranches) to control the area overlooking the Vire valley.
Virdovix, wth his federated army besieges the Romans but Sabinus refuses to be drawn to battle, the gauls daily taunting his cowardice for several days trying to draw him out to fight them.
Sabinus deceives the gauls that he was departing the encampment by sending a gallic auxiliary deserter to convince theVirdovix that the majority of the Roman army was in fear, had low morale were lacking in food and were deserting. Sabinus was withdrawing the following morning early to join Caesar in the south who was fighting the Veneti ( Nantes). Sabinus however places one legion at each gate in along with auxiliary cavalry.
The following morning the Roman commence the apparent departure and the gallic assault commences, Sabinus coordinates the two other legions departing from the encampments other gates to assault the flanks and the rear of the gallic attackers by the auxiliary cavalry. Many of the Gauls were killed pressed between the fortifications and the Roman legions on each flank. The Auxiliary cavalry follow up the fleeing gauls turning it into a slaughter, Virdovix is killed in the fighting at the battle of Vernix and the tribes sue for peace.
Cheers
