French Imperial Guard Mamelukes

French Imperial Guard Mamelukes

First entry for the Analogue Painting Challenge are a unit of Foundry 28mm Mamelukes. I have had these in my possession for at least ten years and as part of my continued focus to clear out my project drawers before I move into my new painting and project workshop on the top floor in March.

They were quite quick to paint and I chose a simple five colour palette and just mixed and matched as I went, I decided to paint green and red leatherwork rather than the normal black just so I could use them as mamelukes or French  Imperial Guard. I also have based them individually as I will use them for skirmish games, plus I have a unit of Gringo 40s to paint that matches my larger figures of my collection.

Colonel Ythier-Sylvain Prive, 2nd French Dragoons

 Colonel Prive 2nd Dragoons

As always when I commence a new dragoon regiment I paint the colonel first, however this chap had to wait for a new Mount to join his regiment.

I have painted him on a rare coloured horse called in French “isabelle” bay, the Americans and Australian a Buckskin. Not a very common colour, in Europe,  a specialty however of the Swedish kings and the Prince Conde de Bourbon in the 17th and 18th century.

The miniature is a Elite figure which makes up 80 odd percent of my French Napoleonic collection. Hope to crack on and have this unit completed before December.

5th Chasseurs a Cheval

 5th Chasseurs a Cheval

A reconditioning of a old unit that has been in the collection for 20 odd years now, rebase, touch ups, highlight of the horses, and added the 5 to the portmanteau. I left the flesh which is the original GW flesh. I have also added a new GMB flag to replace the old Nap Flags one.

Happy with the results, I have another chasseur and one Hussar to complete my light division for my 1805-09 army.

Gendarmes d'élite de la Garde Impériale

Gendarmes d'élite de la Garde Impériale

I have had this unit for two years sitting in the to paint pile, this year I have decided to do some more pieces for my French Napoleonic Armies so last month I started and completed these chaps and then ordered the flag from GMB, I finally mounted the flag yesterday and manage to take some photos this morning.

The figures are from Gringo 40s, who also do a very fine range of other guard units, the figures are on the larger side for 28mm but fit my Elite 1805-09 army nicely. Really happy with my paint job and I hope to get the big boots on the table soon.

Colonel Ignace François Bousson, Colonel 2e Regiment Chasseurs

Colonel Ignace François Bousson, Colonel 2e Regiment Chasseurs

Another Colonel completed for my revamp of my French cavalry, hopefully he can chase off with his regiment some pesky Austrian or British riflemen!

French Colonel Pierre Bonnemains, 5th Chasseurs a cheval

French Colonel Pierre Bonnemains, 5th Chasseurs a cheval

I am revamping and rebasing my light cavalry division to bring it in line with my newly painted regiments of cavalry, while I am updating and even touching up some of the regiments I am adding extra colonels, ADCs, brigade commanders and division commanders. It is good to get back to painting Napoleonics as they are my first love when it comes to wargaming and I have a predominantly French 1805-09 army.

First up is Colonel Pierre Bonnemains, colonel of the 5th Chasseurs

2nd Regiment of Dragoons 1800-1812

 2e Régiment Dragons

One of the oldest French Cavalry regiments in service formed in 1556. In January 1792 the ancien regime former Conde regiment was renumbered the 2e Régiment Dragons. The regiment fought a large number of engagements from the Revolution to empire. I have used Elite 28mm miniatures which make up a majority of my French Napoleonic cavalry 1800-1812 army, although Elite are getting long in the tooth, They do look good in big units.

Yet to be presented their Eagle by the Emperor!

French Napoleonic ADC

 French Generals and ADCs

I have been over the last three weeks painting two French Dragoon regiments, one Baden Dragoon regiment, some Baden Garde du Corps, plus a bunch of Generals.

First completed off the desk is some Brigade Generals, all are from the Elite Miniatures range, which I find quite charming.

French Napoleonic 9th Cuirassiers

Another unit off the table this week, shelf queens again being completed, the third squadron of the 9th Cuirassiers for my 1805-09 French Napoleonic army. I really enjoy painting Elite miniatures, maybe because they are quite charismatic and have ver you good poses. The new Elite horses will fit out the next regiment of French dragoons. They will line up behind my Russians, and Baden cavalry I think.

9th Cuirassiers 1805

9th Cuirassier regiment 3rd squadron

I have been painting a bit of my Napoleonic lead like this month, I finished these guys before I went on summer holidays but failed to take any photos. I have two more squadrons to complete and add the flag when I order it. The figures are from the Elite Miniatures range which I love!

Napoleonic French 5th Hussars

5th Hussards

Well the Australian Napoleonic Congress is on this weekend so there has been a mad rush to get everything ready, I managed to paint 40 Americans for the 1812 skirmish game and 24 hussars so not to bad but not as much as I wanted to do! I went down and helped Colin try to finish Hougoumont for the Congress, but we failed when I got sick on the weekend, so we lost two nights and days of construction, hopefully we will get it done before Christmas! Looking forward to a big weekend of Napoleonic gaming and catching up with some mates for lunch, dinner and a few drinks! madly trying to finish some terrain for Sunday's game so I best go!
