Publius Quinctilius Varus And Arminius

Quintili Vare, legiones redde!

Next off the desk are some foundry command, representing Varus and Arminius before the disaster……
Another entry into the analogue painting challenge. Quite a easy paint job on these and quite happy with the result.

Sarmation Auxillia command

Sarmations are coming....

Completed these two as the same time as the main unit but I needed to cut out some 50mm command stands from mdf and then base them.

Both 28mm warlord figures the standard bearers hose had to be filled a little with green stuff. The warlords mace is quite flimsy and I did consider replacing it, on the next set that will get painted next year I will do I have some variation for the command.

Sarmation Cataphracts

Sarmation Cataphractarii

One of my goals during lockdown is to complete my project drawers are part started figures in between painting my main projects, this last few weeks I have really put a dent in it emptying a drawer almost completely in preparation for my workspace rebuild and also start preparing to refill for next years upcoming projects.

I do plan to add at some stage some more Sarmations and build some German tribes to fight my middle imperial Romans, but for now these figures will join my Imperial Roman army.

The figures are from the warlord range, a bit of a pain as they are two part figures, but after pinning and adding green stuff I am quite happy with the results.

Slings and stones! Funditores

Off the desk some Greek slingers that have been shelf queens for some time, decided to complete them and get them into the display cabinet before I started my Russian Napoleonics that have been glaring at me. 28mm Foundry figures, one face was miscast so I done the best I could without trying to rebuild it.
These guys are quite universal and will fit in any ancient army, Greek, Roman or Carthaginian

Roman Legionary

The first item off the new painting desk is a 200mm Young miniatures bust of a Roman Legionary, this guy has been partly finished for possibly 3 or 4 years, so I thought as I have restricted work space that I would complete as I go, rather than have multiple projects on the desk at any one time.

The figure is quite well sculpted and made from resin, it went together easily with no need for any fillers, as this guy was my first 200mm bust I was a little hesitant to paint his face and especially his eyes, but after looking at a few tutorial videos online I was more confident. I used Vallejo colours and mattisse drying retarder and mediums to get my layered skin tone. I was extremely happy with the final result and now he resides with my 54mm collection in the display cabinet.

Roman Legio vigesima secunda Deiotariana

Twenty-second Deiotaran Legio

Levied approximately in 48 BC and disbanded after the Jewish Bar Kokhba revolt of 132–135. It was named after Deiotarus , the client Celtic king of the Tolistobogii tribe of Galatia. Deiotarus, during the Republican period, raised a number of legions trained by Romans. Then a single Roman Legio was formed after the annexation of Galatia in 48 BC. The XXII Deiotariana was not commanded by a senator, but by a Prefect from the equestrian-order, because the legio controlled the ports and supply depots for the all important grain in Eygpt. The figures are Black Tree Design, all based for Impetus, two of the 6 legio bases to come, waiting for more transfers.
