Germanic Chieftain Maroboduus

The Great Crow

Maroboduus was born into a noble family of the Marcomanni, a Suebi confederation tribe. As a young man, he was a hostage in Italy and under Emperor Augustus. The Marcomanni had been defeated and subjugated by the Romans in a 6 year campaign by 10 BC. In 9 BC, Maroboduus returned to Germania and became ruler of his people as a client and friend of the Romans. With the threat of further Roman expansion into the Rhine-Danube basin, Maroboduus led the Marcomanni to the area later known as Bohemia to be outside the range of the Roman influence. There, he took the title of king and organized a confederation of several neighboring Germanic tribes.

The miniature is from the Warlord Range, but is huuuuuge, 34mm head to eye, so it will not match their plastics and needs to be based separately.

In early AD 6,  Tiberius launched a campaign against the Marcomanni, seeing the confederation with the Quadi as a threat. Tiberius, Legate Gaius Sentius Saturninus and Consul Legatus Marcus Aemilius Lepidus led an army of 13 legions, totaling around 100,000 men (65,000 heavy infantry legionaries, 10,000–20,000 cavalrymen, archers, and 10,000–20,000 civilians) against Maroboduus.

General Maximus

 General Maximus

The next off the table is 28mm General Maximus from Warlord Games. Again quite an easy paint job, the horse is a superb sculpt, the miniature though is on the short side. Again the miniature is for a commission and was a entry in the analogue painting challenge

Imperial Roman Scorpions

 Imperial Roman Scorpion Artillery

Next Roman pieces off the desk are some scorpions, the miniatures are from the Warlord Range, they are from the plastic range. They do paint up quite well, but the arms poses are a little heroic and the fit not great.

Roman Siege Artillery

 Imperial Roman Siege Artillery

Off the desk last week two pieces of Roman siege artillery from Warlord Games, they go together nicely but would have liked more crew figures. These are commission figures for my mates army. I have a pair coming up for my army also.

The Ballista is a superb model, just ensure that you face the twisted rope inwards (I made the mistake of placing it the wrong way around the first time) I drilled out a hole to string it, added plastic warlord stakes, the feet are a little small though in my opinion and so easily topple if it is not glued down properly. .

The Onager is a nice model but is a bit of trouble to put together, take your time and make sure it is square, I used super glue on one side, then long drying glue to ensure it was straight . I went with the traditional red as requested for the tunics.

River Song, The impossible Astronaut Dr Who

River Song, The Impossible Astronaut

A female miniature from the Warlord Dr Who Range, “ River Song, The impossible Astronaut”. I am quite happy with my denim result, the figure sort of looks like the character but is a little flat in the resin casting. Another entry for the analogue painting challenge.

Roman Auxiliary cohort

 Cohor III Augusta Thracia Auxiliaries

Next off the desk is a unit of Auxiliary’s for the Dacian campaign, I think I will rebase them on 60x60,  as I am not happy with the smaller base sizes recommended for Hail Caesar, spears and shields will get knocked around too much I think. Really happy with the green colour next units will be in cream or blue I think. Another entry for the analogue painting challenge.

Maximus General of the North

 Maximus, Maximus

Next off the table is General Maximus general of the northern legions, the miniature is from Warlord and for me is a little on the small side of 28mm. Another entry for the analogue painting challenge.

Republican Roman casualty markers

 Roman casualties

This week I finally sat down and completed some bits on my painting desk, so a lot will come off the desk this long weekend in France.

First up some Warlord Caesarian Roman casualty markers for Impetus, nice and quick, base colour, wash and simple highlights on the skin etc.  I actually run out of basing materiel after these three, as I completed 12 in total…… sorted by the end of the weekend though!

Next up tribal Germans, than some more Roman’s

Sarmation Cataphracts

Sarmation Cataphractarii

One of my goals during lockdown is to complete my project drawers are part started figures in between painting my main projects, this last few weeks I have really put a dent in it emptying a drawer almost completely in preparation for my workspace rebuild and also start preparing to refill for next years upcoming projects.

I do plan to add at some stage some more Sarmations and build some German tribes to fight my middle imperial Romans, but for now these figures will join my Imperial Roman army.

The figures are from the warlord range, a bit of a pain as they are two part figures, but after pinning and adding green stuff I am quite happy with the results.

Gallic Auxillia

Gallic Auxillia

I have really concentrating on the completion of projects in my project drawers that sit in my work area, these chaps have been awaiting completion before I move to France and were the beginnings of my gallic project before Victrix came along with the huge bags of plastics. Originally I planned to build my Gaulois tribes from metal ranges from various manufacturers to get the variants I wanted in the tribe. These are 32 of the 80 odd figures I commenced with which are a mix of Old Glory, Crusader, Warlord metals, and Gripping beast. They basically have had the base coats completed for three years, but were never finished as the shiney new Victrix figures came along to change my focus. Last week when I was restocking my 6 project drawers that sit on my workspace these guys came from the back to the front of the project table and were basically  completed in three days, the hand painted shields were another two days and basing a further one. I have added some victrix bits including plumes, weapons and a carnax.

These three units will join my other three completed Gallic Auxillia bases (which, possibly also need a review now I have completed these) as Gallic Allies for my Republican, Caesarian and Imperial Roman armies. I tried to paint them a little differently so they looked more southern or eastern Gallic in appearance with horizontal striped germanic type tunics. I really enjoyed completing these and will try to resist buying some ore as this takes my Gallic totals to over three hundred figures........

German Tribesmen

This year i have been trying to complete lots of little projects that have been sitting in my project drawers on my desk for anytime longer than 12 months, this unit has been half finished and unbased for at least a year. I am not impressed with the warlord German tribesmen at all after I assembled them and painted them, they suffer from the same problems that the celts do being over animated with wild arms etc like they are riding a roller coaster. I decided to add some of the lovely Foundry tribesmen to the mix to improve the look of the unit at least in the front rank. Back to medievals this week then a change I think to WW2.

Progredi Testudine 28mm Roman Testudo

I received two of the Warlord Testudo's for my birthday back in march, I actually finished these guys about three months ago but based them for WAB, since I am making the change to Impetus I re-based them and decided to take a pic!

30YW / ECW Tercio

More 30YW off the painting desk last weekend, some more Warlord plastic pike and shot, these guys also have deliberately been supplied with no recognizable standard.. The plastics really paint up nicely and look quite good. I have another two warlord pike and shot blocks to finish off to give myself a four tercio strong 30YW army for the club games.

They have already fought their first battle where they routed a Astley's Regt (a foundry metal unit!) see here.

BATREP Bloody plain

On monday Greg and I played a quick game of warhammer ECW at my place on the dining table as the outdoors is not so warm this time of year!

We each selected some troops from my ECW Royalist collection. Greg elected to take a unit of curassiers, four pike and shot blocks, 1 unit of clubmen, 1 unit of dragoons, a cannon and two generals. I elected to take four pike blocks, a unit of gentlemen pensioners, a unit of dragoons, a cannon and two generals also.

After setup we diced for each unit to see if it arrived on the battlefield, Greg's lobsters failed to arrive and were left off the table for two turns.

I won the toss and elected to take the first turn, as we were playing on a small table I advanced forward my pike blocks to have a little room (in case of fleeing troops!) and dismounted my dragoons in the village so they could control the village, I fired my cannon and caused the first casualty! Greg then moved a few of his units sending his dragoons and clubmen into the village, moving his Irish and Scots leaving one unit to fire as we were within range causing casualties to my units.

turn two, I elected to leave all my troops in place so they could fire full volleys, causing massive casualties on the Blue Regt almost causing a morale roll! My cannon caused some more casualties on the Irish Regt, my dragoons fired at close range (2 inches) at the opposing Dragoons, 1 hit from 9.......pitable. Greg then dismounted his dragoons, moved his clubmen into the buildings, moved his Irish and Scots, reloaded his Blue Regt shots

Turn Three, I remounted my dragoons and moved them back out of close range of Greg's dragoons, moved my General with is bodyguard and moved my Green Regt and the Kings Regt, and reloaded Astley's Regt, I fired my cannon and caused a few more casualties on the Irish. Greg moved his lobsters on my left Flank and moved his Irish, Scots and Red Regt closer to the action he also Elected to charge his Blue Regt against Astley's who stood and received the charge and were promptly cut up in the ensuing hand to hand (yes I rolled like a girl. Greg also had a crack with his cannon at my General and bodyguard who were standing in the open in column, he promptly rolled a misfire!!! My finely painted Foundry Astley's fled from the plastics off the table taking the dragoons with them, morale checks all round, all the rest stood!

turn Five I charged my cavalry against Greg's artillery, Greg's Blue Regt last turn had followed up Astley's Regt within close range of Gerard's Regt who blasted them at close range, and the Kings regt also hit them from the flank with one sleeve of shot, the Blue Regt panicked and fled causing some of Greg's units to flee, The Scots ran off the table (with out being effective), the Red Regt stood and the Irish ran like girls!

Greg however returned the favour charging his cavalry against my Gun, who were all cut down, he also mounted his dragoons and charged his clubmen against the Kings Regt, the clubmen failed to hit and fled back through the village.

Turn Six High Tide I thought for me I charged Greg's fleeing Irish, who continued to flee, I reformed my Kings Regt and marched them off towards the action on the other side of table, in my haste I failed to move my Green Regt to face Greg's lobsters.
My c General finally finished off the artillery. Greg then rolled like a legend and reformed his Irish, he charged my Green Regt with the lobsters who failed their panic test and fled taking Gerard's Regt with them, my whole center collapsed leaving only my General and the Kings Regt on the table.

turn Seven I moved the Kings Regt again towards the enemy and retired the King and his bodyguard. Greg charged the Kings Regt with both the dragoons and the lobsters, the kings men stood and received the charge but failed to do any damage and promptly threw up their hands in surrender, The King Fled from the table.........again!

A great day out, I thought I had the game in turn six but not to be, great to have my ECW out for a game though
