Roman XI Legion 1st Cohort

 XI Legion Claudia Pia Fidelis

Now for some legion posts to begin,  after this army has sat in my lead storage for at least 7 years as a swap with my great mate Colin for painting a army for him. With the Analogue Painting Challenge this year  I decided to get them done. Now after 5 weeks of painting over the coming weeks I will present to you the XI legion all based for Impetus and the majority are from the Foundry Range. I have 10 cohorts of 15 figures, not sure if I will do a second cohort for the 1st yet …. But I probably will.

I also have a Roman commission army so they will follow. So lots of Imperial Roman’s over the next month or so.

General commander on the Danube

 Commander on the Danube

The first piece of my Foundry Imperial Roman command dioramas, a Gaul being questioned about the local tribes…I have a few planned for the analogue painting challenge. The miniatures are all from the foundry range. Really happy with my result.

The White Wizard

 Gandalf the white

A superb miniature from the Games Workshop Lord of the Rings Range. I enjoyed painting immensely, with some nice blending of creams and whites. Another entry for the analogue painting challenge. This figure will go into my sons collection as he has the whole fellowship on foot.

Gaslands Crocodile

 Gaslands Crocodile

Another entry for the Analogue Painting Challenge, a repaint of a matchbox crocodile car, drilled a hole to add a spare cupola from PSC and also a plastic crewman. The gun is a simple piece of sprue. Fun to paint and have a few more to come.

General Maximus

 General Maximus

The next off the table is 28mm General Maximus from Warlord Games. Again quite an easy paint job, the horse is a superb sculpt, the miniature though is on the short side. Again the miniature is for a commission and was a entry in the analogue painting challenge

Imperial Roman Scorpions

 Imperial Roman Scorpion Artillery

Next Roman pieces off the desk are some scorpions, the miniatures are from the Warlord Range, they are from the plastic range. They do paint up quite well, but the arms poses are a little heroic and the fit not great.

Roman Siege Artillery

 Imperial Roman Siege Artillery

Off the desk last week two pieces of Roman siege artillery from Warlord Games, they go together nicely but would have liked more crew figures. These are commission figures for my mates army. I have a pair coming up for my army also.

The Ballista is a superb model, just ensure that you face the twisted rope inwards (I made the mistake of placing it the wrong way around the first time) I drilled out a hole to string it, added plastic warlord stakes, the feet are a little small though in my opinion and so easily topple if it is not glued down properly. .

The Onager is a nice model but is a bit of trouble to put together, take your time and make sure it is square, I used super glue on one side, then long drying glue to ensure it was straight . I went with the traditional red as requested for the tunics.

The Black Devils

The Black Devils

Established in 1665 Dutch Marines were the only volunteer regular unit in the Dutch ground forces. On the tenth of May the Marine Regiment was preparing to depart from Rotterdam to the Dutch East Indies and join the other marine units already posted there. About 650 marines were in the barracks in Rotterdam when the invasion began with a further 200 as part of the training and recruit centre.

They became famous for their action during the invasion when the marine regiment in Rotterdam consisting of 100 marines, some artillery, Armoured cars and Naval personnel defended the Willemsbrug traffic bridge across the Nieuwe Maas river and prevented the link up for four days against the German Fallschirmjager who had tried to take the bridges by surprise on the 10th of May.

The name the black devils was thought to be christened by Oberstleutnant Von Choltitz “ die schwarzen Teufel ” when the 6 marines who were still alive defending the Willemsbrug bridge surrendered.

I have decided to build a complete battalion for the regiment, structured at full strength like a infantry regiment with support elements, a 81mm mortar, MG section, AT rifle and RHQ and recon coy. The miniatures are all SHQ.

Regimental Head Quarters

Co plus 7, AT rifle, reconnaissance platoon cycles.

RHQ command element, radio trailer and car to be added

River Song, The impossible Astronaut Dr Who

River Song, The Impossible Astronaut

A female miniature from the Warlord Dr Who Range, “ River Song, The impossible Astronaut”. I am quite happy with my denim result, the figure sort of looks like the character but is a little flat in the resin casting. Another entry for the analogue painting challenge.

Roman Auxiliary cohort

 Cohor III Augusta Thracia Auxiliaries

Next off the desk is a unit of Auxiliary’s for the Dacian campaign, I think I will rebase them on 60x60,  as I am not happy with the smaller base sizes recommended for Hail Caesar, spears and shields will get knocked around too much I think. Really happy with the green colour next units will be in cream or blue I think. Another entry for the analogue painting challenge.
