Napoleonic French casualties

I have been busy this last week since returning and have managed a number of hours at the desk. First up some 28mm Napoleonic French casualties from old glory and out of ammunition markers. A simple afternoons painting, then basing on warbases dials, ready for General de Brigade or Grand Armee games.

A Cunning plan - 2024

2024 A cunning plan

This year I will be back in Oz for Christmas up to Cancon convention then back to France in March.

Plans this year in no particular order

  • 18mm AB French infantry brigade or more
  • 28mm WW2 (I know I swore I would not but ……
  • 28mm ancient Greeks just to compete the army really
  • 28mm ancient Germans (left overs from last years project yes there are more)
  • 28mm Caesarian Roman’s
  • 20mm Cold War Warpac, complete two battalion motorised infantry, vehicles, artillery and support equipment 60 infantry, 20-30 odd vehicles and 2 aircraft and one chopper. For my VDV (Quite a few kits to build)
  • 20mm Yom Kippur Egyptian vehicles and aircraft 16 vehicles and two aircraft. (Assembling of kits required)
  • 28mm Napoleonic Prussians, British, Austrians and French infantry and cavalry  60-80 figs (undercoated, and several hundred to assemble) additions.
  • Random 20mm vehicles, ww2 Dutch, ww2 Belgian, allied and German, just so I do not waste airbrush time really! (Lots prepared)
  • Gaslands cars - 8-10 matchbox cars to be converted about 20 crew plus some terrain.
  • 1/72 Ww1 aircraft more allied and Jasta builds (need to be built)
I will also try to do a few pieces mostly at a whim and if it involves ww2 or modern aircraft (which I love building), random theme pieces, naval or space ships perhaps also. .

All the best to everyone this year, may you produce pieces of art worthy of the brush God!

Terrain Tuesday - Statue

 Town Statue

First figures painted for the year, and my first entry for this years Analogue painting challenge. I picked this miniature up from combat games in Sydney. The figure is from the reaper miniatures village range and is obviously a copy of Joan of arc statue in Chinon. Although bronze when weathered is a brown colour for me it looked too dull, so I elected to paint brass then add a green wash.

Analogue Painting Challenge XIIII

 Analogue Painting Challenge XIIII 2023-24

Result of painful overstretching of the Analogue Painting Challenge

I plan to participate in the Analogue  Painting Challenge again this year, I have reduced my points to 500 points which is predominantly because we will be in Australia for half of the challenge so smaller pieces of 20mm figures will travel with me. Last years total was 3304 points, which was around 400 28mm figures painted so I doubt I will reach those dizzy heights.

The figure painting challenge really pushes production in the winter/summer months and will also give me a spring board again into next year.  The challenge commences on the 21st of December and finishes on March 21st 2022.

You may commence the challenge with undercoated figures, and the points are scored thus

6mm foot figure = 0.5 point
6mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 1 point
6mm vehicle = 2 points
10mm foot figure = 1 point
10mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 2 points
10mm vehicle = 3 points
15mm foot figure = 2 points
15mm mounted figure, artillery piece or large crew served weapon = 4 points 15mm vehicle = 8 points
20mm foot figure = 4 points
20mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 8 points 20mm vehicle = 15 points

28mm foot figure = 5 points
28mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 10 points
28mm vehicle = 20 points
40mm foot figure = 7 points
40mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 15 points
40mm vehicle = 25 points
54mm foot figure = 10 points
54mm mounted figures, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 20 points
54mm vehicle, limber, etc. = 30 points

Terrain is based on 6 inch squared areas

My Cunning Plan....

I am selecting a mix of 28mm and 20mm figures and vehicles. The main project will be Swedes and the remainder of my VDV this will be my big game in April. I intend to complete two Norman and Anjou-Maine Anarchy and Scots for the 100 years war pieces. If I get motivated more 20mm ww2. There is also the side challenge, so I may partake in that to boost points.
  • AB Napoleonic French
  • 28mm Greeks
  • 20mm Soviets Cold War
  • 20mm Swedes Cold War
  • 28mm HYW Scots nobles and foot
  • 28 Norman and Anjou/Maine for the anarchy
  • 20mm American 2nd Armoured
  • 20mm 9th Panzer
  • 20mm British armour
  • Gaslands cars and figs
Terrain
  • 28mm 11th-12th  century chateau
  • 20mm Ww2 and modern buildings
  • Gallic buildings

Analogue Painting Challenge 2023 wrap up

Analogue Painting Challenge XIII it’s a wrap

A big hearty thank you to Curt, Sarah, the Minions and all of the participants for another great challenge. A wide range of inspiring, superb and cracking paint jobs were entered,  huge terrain projects, and massive miniature armies were built and hopefully lead mountains were diminished.

I was really happy with my results this year, my first time I surpassed my challenge goal number and  completed the side challenge. I managed too complete every studio so that really boosted my points. My highlights for the studios were building the ww1 aircraft and the female miniatures painted for Lady Sarah’s limousine which turned out a treat, which too my surprise I won a prize for.

Rabens Ravens

General Varus

The fruit picker

Chieftain Marobodus

I had a lot of projects I wanted to get started on, my main focus though was my Roman’s and Germanics. Originally I planned only do 120 odd Roman’s but by challenge end it was close to 200 miniatures, and 140 Ancient Germans plus some nice commands. I did fail to complete the ten cohorts planned for my legion, due to a planning fail and the Royal Mail strike which left me short 4 foundry commands and 18 praetorian shields (which could be possibly in storage somewhere) and running low on enthusiasm for Roman’s and Germanics in the last ten days of the challenge. I plan to complete the last 4 units next month or so when I return from holidays in Australia.

Looking forward to next years challenge, and plan too build another big army…..not sure what though. See you all next year.

Terrain Tuesday Medieval buildings WIP

Medieval buildings

Last week off  I have been working on some tabletop workshop medieval buildings for the analogue painting challenge.

The buildings are quite nice with some paint on them and I now have eight if them from the tabletop workshop  plastic range from warlord games.

I have added plaster between the collombage, then textured it to achieve a rough finish.

Caesarian casualties

 Caesarian casualties terrain

Another paint job last week for the analogue painting challenge, the final casualty markers for my Caesarian army. I plan to use these for both legions that I am building and may add shields to the standing chaps. The miniatures are from the Warlord Miniatures range.

Germanic tribesmen harii

 Germanic Harii Tribesmen

off the table last week was another unit of Germanic tribesmen, I wanted to depict the Harii tribesmen who according to Tacitus were painted in black with black shields, I painted the miniatures as normal then inked the miniatures which did not achieve the look that I was after so out come the German black grey and I approached them more look Indian warpaint on the naked miniatures.  Another entry for the analogue painting challenge.

The miniatures are from the Warlord Miniatures range, and are listed as the Germanic fanatics.

Jasta 18 Raben Ravens

 Jasta 18 Rabens Ravens

A project that has the aircraft built in some cases for 7 years or more, I finally decided to get this unit done in a mad rush of three days for the analogue painting challenge. Apart for airbrush undercoat white, all hand painted, the transfers are from Pheon Models range. the aircraft are 1/72 a mix of Airfix, Roden and Italeri I think......the pilots are a mix of Airfix and Wartime Miniatures ww1 pilots all ready for a Canvas Eagles or WOW clash!
