Slings and stones!

Off the desk some Greek slingers that have been shelf queens for some time, decided to complete them and get them into the display cabinet before I started my Russian Napoleonics that have been glaring at me. 28mm Foundry figures, one face was miscast so I done the best I could without trying to rebuild it.
These guys are quite universal and will fit in any ancient army, Greek, Roman or Carthaginian

Saxon / Polish Infantry GNW

Continued completion of my unfinished Polish army, I gave had these in the lead pile for a very long time, so I popped them on the desk this week, easily completed in two days. I am unsure if I will keep them as originally they were purchased for a imagination army and they are a little late for my Polish hussar army, so off to market I think.

Foundry miniatures they were a breeze to paint.

Lithuanian Commonwealth Winged Lancer

Off the painting desk this week some Lithuanian winged lancers from the Foundry range. They have been in thevpainting pile for at least 5 years. They are part of the winged Hussar army I have built for Impetus Barouque, the command is missing and not yet purchased, next Foundry order I will sort that out I think. They were a pleasure to paint, I elected to depict this unit with part bleached horses, which is a really nice effect.

Polish winged hussar companions

Winged hussar companions, these were only company sized but I like the different capes and lance designs, so I have whole units of them. Foundry again, quite plain really but the lances and pennants lighten them up.

Next unit also a companion unit, the stars were tough, and I really like the lances

Polish winged hussars

Next units off the desk polish winged hussar regiments, based for impetus and might and reason. The figures are foundry. I am really happy how the leopard skins turned out and the lances.

And the next unit, foundry again

Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth army

Off the desk this week, a few more units for project that has been on the go for a number of years. I have rebased some units so they double for impetus and might and reason.
Figures are Foundry for the cavalry and Tag for the infantry bar two units.

First a rebased militia unit, foundry figures

Next up a TAG unit, fresh off the desk

And another tag unit

Pontic Pike

Well finally finished my first block of Pontic pike, only two more to go, I continued with the mythical beast theme adding Ceberus to the units banner, not 100% happy with the result as I tried to copy a ancient Greek vase of Hercules capturing the beast, it was depicted with one red, one white and one black head and body, as my feild was alradyred I decided to paint a yellow head instead. I probaly would of been better off just depicting the head instead of the whole body, at this stage it will stay as it is, I may revisit at some stage though.

All of my pike are with charged pikes so fitting them has proved a challenge, I have decided to add small rank numbers on the back in rank numbers and colours for each rank so placing them down come game time will be easier.

Victory without Qauter

The guys at the Goulburn Valiant Stormer’s are throwing around some ideas for the big project next year, a few of us think be 30 years war could be a possible front runner, as the warlord plastics lend themselves nicely to the period (still some discussion and dissention in the ranks as to basing conventions though), so with that thought a number of us have started to play test some rule sets. On Sunday Dave and I (we both normally play Warhammer English Civil War) had a game using the Free “Victory without Quarter” rules.

Using my ECW figs we each had a C in C, one cavalry general , two pike and shot blocks, one trotter and one galloper horse unit, one gun and a clubman for the parliament and highlanders for the Irish Royalists.

The game was played over 4 hours, I really liked the rules as I found they could be a little unpredictable and I liked the different factors for troop types and the card idea, although I think that VWQ will be a little slow for those players wanting to get two games in on a club day. VWQ still gave a satisfactory result and possibly would speed up after a few games; however I don’t think they would handle much more troop wise, two more pike blocks possibly and another regiment of horse each would slow it down even more. My ECW army is a mix of different figures, the Irish Montrose army are mostly Eureka, the pike and shot, horse, a mix of Old Glory, Perry and Eureka Highlanders and a Foundry gun and crew, On the parliment side, all Foundry and Perry except for the clubmen who are Warlord metals.

As the boys want to play a more grand tactical game I think VWQ will not be suitable for what we have in mind, although I would happily use VWQ for ECW. The next rule set we will play test is the Baroque set from the guys who wrote impetus.

Darkest Africa/ Pulp Warriors

These foundry figures were painted for our "up the Waa-Zooo" club pulp game for Feburary, I had such a great time painting these guys I almost bought a bunch of Marsi off foundry direct. I am not sure I will use these guys for some time so they will probaly make it onto the top shelf of the display cabinet.
